I have been asked this question a few times and the answer is fairly simple.
Here is the reps and the effect they have:-
1 - 5 Reps - Increased Strength via enhanced neural drive 6 - 8 Reps - Maximum strength plus increase in muscle size 9 - 12 Reps - Best Muscle size gains 13 -20 Reps - Decreasing Strength and Size, Increase in Endurance Gains

Shape and getting a have sympathy for the working muscles are VERY vital, so if by not tallying, you mean not focusing on the distinction between 7 reps and 8 reps and not being fixated with discovering the "muscle constructing rep go, and then I want with any other one,,
